A narrow slot canyon through the San Rafael Swell presents several obstacles to negotiate on this moderate hike.

Approximately 75 miles (120 km) long, it is the name given to the distinctive eastern edge of the San Rafael Swell. Composed primarily of steeply tilted layers of Navajo and Wingate Sandstone, it has been eroded into tall fins, domes, cliffs, and deep canyons. The San Rafael River, Interstate 70, and Muddy Creek all cut through the San Rafael Reef. There are also numerous slot canyons that twist their way through the flanks of the San Rafael Reef, among them Crack Canyon, Chute Canyon and Length: 5 miles round trip. SEE LOCATIONS ON THE MAP. See Location on the Map. Crack Canyon is a narrow slot running through the San Rafael Reef, in the San Rafael Swell near Temple Mountain. It is similar to Little Wildhorse Canyon, but it does not draw as many visitors. It is not a technical hike. Over the past couple of years I’ve spent a weekend in January exploring the canyons of the San Rafael Reef at the edge of the San Rafael Swell just west of Green River. I guess I’ve continued to do this each year because it’s an easy drive from home and it doesn’t really matter if there is snow on the ground or not. Ding and Dang, also known as First and Second canyons, are the next two breaks through the San Rafael Reef west of Bell and Little Wild Horse canyons, and are reached by the same maintained access road, starting from Goblin Valley State Park. Both are short - the interesting parts are less than a mile long - but quite exciting and although only Ramp Canyon is the first breach through the San Rafael Reef east of the Muddy River - about 3 miles east - while Cistern Canyon is parallel to it and 1.5 miles further. Both are usually dry, though Cistern has an intermittent spring at its mouth and may have a small creek flowing through, which south of the reef forms Hunt Draw, and joins the Slot Canyons of the American Southwest - Baptist Draw/Upper Chute Canyon, San Rafael Swell, Utah. Probably the best slot canyon system in the whole of the San Rafael Swell is found not through the upturned cliffs of the reef, but winding across open grasslands in the south central region, a place known as Sinbad Country. Here, the upper end of Chute Canyon and its Baptist Draw tributary cut deep into Cedar Mesa sandstone, forming long stretches of twisting, very narrow passages through Slot Canyons of the American Southwest - Muddy Creek, San Rafael Swell, Utah. It has an uninspiring name yet Muddy Creek forms the deepest canyon in the San Rafael Swell and for many miles flows through a spectacular gorge of colorful sandstone - known as The Chute, the vertical walls here rise for several hundred feet above the streambed, which usually has running water all year.

Go southwest a few minutes until a shallow drainage is encountered. Follow this down to the head of several canyons. There are 3 major canyons, with a bridge or arch in each, though they are very hard to spot or photograph. The first one (eastern most) is San Rafael Bridge, best viewed from below if doing the technical route. Little Wild Horse & Bell Canyon loop: This hike is one of the San Rafael’s most popular destinations. It offers hiking in slot canyons with only moderate challenge.
